This was a complex and evolving project, with the product strategy shifting in response to the global pandemic. As job losses and economic uncertainty underscored the urgent need for updating digital skills, our focus pivoted to employee up-skilling and bridging learning gaps. Our goal was to establish a strong foundation for the Learning app
by seamlessly integrating it into employees’ daily workflows within Teams. I was tasked to design a compelling app aimed at empowering both employees and managers to search/browse, upload, and engage with relevant learning content while providing personalized recommendations within a centralized library. To achieve this, we incorporated Microsoft learning content from LinkedIn Learning and Microsoft Learn while allowing organizations to upload their own training materials and third-party content within Sharepoint. We also worked on supporting a growing number of popular 3rd party LMS integrations. I led the 0-to-1 design for the Learning app in Teams—later named Viva Learning—from initial concept to MVP launch on desktop and web and worked with the IDC team in India for coherence on the mobile experience.

Early excitement with the Learning app in Teams

Early excitement with the Learning app in Teams

CLO SUMMIT - February 2020

CLO SUMMIT - February 2020

The early concept of Viva Learning was first introduced at a CLO conference in 2020. We demoed two features for the desktop and mobile experience, highlighting how users could add a learning tab to a chat or channel in Teams and add a learning course to a chat with message extensions—seamlessly integrating learning into everyday workflows. This was to gain buy-in and add excitement to a new app that was yet to come into fruition.

There was a lot of press that lead into our work
with a focus on helping job seekers in a weakened economy during COVID to find jobs and be able
to upskill or reskill at work.

Getting started: initial workshops

Getting started: initial workshops

With all the press happening in anticipation for our release, we had to get started immediately. We had a small team that worked like a start-up. Working remotely during the pandemic, we brainstormed scenarios that we wanted to capture for our users roles. These were then prioritized and were rapidly worked on as the GA release happened one year later (a deadline that we had to advocate for).
